Mr. Maki, the latest from the team behind Ramen-San and Sushi-San, just rolled into Streeterville at 676 N. Saint Clair. The new casual spot is built around maki rolls and the Japanese combo meal known as teishoku. Here are five things we’re loving at Mr. Maki!

Have you tried it yet? Make your reservation at Mr. Maki here.

Soft Shell Crab Maki Roll at Mr. Maki

The Maki

Because Mr. Maki wouldn’t be Mr. Maki … (do we even have to say it?) Here, you’ll find quality fish coupled with unexpected touches for unique takes on classic Japanese dishes. The Softshell Crab Maki with avocado and masago aioli is the team’s version of a spider roll; the Tempura Shrimp Roll gets a blast of spice with Korean gochujang and a sprinkling of black sesame. Don’t expect just any Spicy Tuna Roll: The one at Mr. Maki includes avocado, cilantro and jalapeno.

Mr. Maki Teishoku set

The Super-Combo Meal, Teishoku

This home-style meal is commonly found in local eateries throughout Japan where all the dishes are conveniently served together. Mr. Maki’s teishoku sets come with a choice of a main dish plus roasted edamame, miso soup, a side and house salad. Choose from a variety of stir-fry, teriyaki, maki and sashimi which makes this our new favorite way to eat.

Mr Maki Tomato Caprese Tartare

Inventive Vegetables

As if the menu wasn’t already crave-able enough, Mr. Maki takes vegetables to another level. The tempura-battered Japanese Eggplant Fries with mint, cilantro and yuzu mayo will make you want to turn your back on regular french fries forever. Try the vegetarian Tomato “Caprese” Tartare – a combination of vine-ripened and roasted tomatoes and tobanjan mayo served with whipped tofu, Thai basil and wonton and rice sesame crisps.

Japanese Cheesecake from Mr Maki

The Fluffy Japanese Cheesecake

Have you seen those food videos of the silky, spongy Japanese Cheesecake? Well, Mr. Maki’s got it. This fluffy dessert is served with Kalamansi citrus curd and matcha sweet cream and is unlike any cheesecake we’ve ever had.
