Let’s take a look back at the last 12 years of Monday Night Live:
Petterino’s Monday Night Live aims to bridge the gap between the hospitality and theater communities in the heart of downtown Chicago. For more than a decade, producer and performer, Denise McGowan Tracy and co-host cabaret performer and music director, Beckie Menzie have been entertaining live audiences with hundreds of performers at this unscripted musical showcase in Chicago’s Theater District.
Plus, every Monday, Petterino’s chef team puts out a rotating menu of appetizer, entree and dessert options, all for under $20!
How it Started
Denise began her Chicago entertainment career discovering and presenting talent at legendary nightclub Byfield’s as well as the iconic Pump Room (now Booth One). In September 2007, she came up with the idea for Monday Night Live after hearing Liza Minelli at a PBS taping with Ann Hampton Callaway where Liza spoke about the fun she and her friends had around the piano at her home. Denise pitched the idea to LEYE founder Rich Melman and Monday Night Live was born at Petterino’s. The goal was to invite performers from Chicago’s theater, cabaret, jazz, pop and opera communities into Petterino’s and provide a platform for professional and aspiring singers to showcase their talents and promote shows to an engaged audience.
Denise says the first Monday Night Live show was exhilarating and credits co-hosting one of Chicago’s longest-running impromptu musical formats to Beckie’s talent.
“No matter if you’re a Broadway star or aspiring artist Beckie makes people look and feel good about their performance.”
She believes the secret to their success is the perfect storm of the location and reputation of Petterino’s and the hundreds of talented performers who have stepped onto the stage.
Monday Night Live is a different show every week – that’s the excitement. You never know who is going to grace the stage. Monday Night Live has played host to more than 700 talented performers including Tony-award nominees, cast members from touring and local Broadway productions like “Hamilton,” “Wicked,” “Jersey Boys,” “Dear Evan Hansen,” “Jesus Christ Superstar,” “Carousel” and more.
Denise looks forward to being surprised when new performers join the fun and wow the crowd.
“There was a gentleman having dinner while in town for a healthcare convention. He loved what was happening and asked if he could sing. He didn’t have any sheet music with him so he just called a song in his key and he and Beckie performed together fabulously. When he finished the crowd went wild and I told him to give up his day job.”
The Community, Twelve Years Strong
The theater community is a tight-knit one that embraces Petterino’s as a place to perform and just be yourself on stage. Denise explains that the camaraderie in addition to the music makes Monday Night Live unique.
“We have become this unexpected, supportive family with a diverse crowd of all ages who always have a great time,” says Denise. “We have some regulars and new folks every week. One of the regulars, Ken Baker, sings ‘Home’ from The Wiz and says Monday Night Live has become a home to those of us who love music and to support friends and newcomers in a great environment.
Denise and Beckie end every show with a duet that is a crowd favorite.
