June 4-10 marks Negroni Week 2018, a nationwide effort to raise money for an array of charities while drinking one of the best classic cocktails in existence. $1 from each Negroni sold will benefit the Greater Chicago Food Depository, No Kid Hungry or United Cerebral Palsy.
This year our mixologists have leaned into the week with off-the-wall creations, like floating a Negroni atop a classic tiki cocktail and infusing the ingredients of a classic Caprese salad in a Negroni.
But what in the world is a Negroni, you ask? The modern Negroni as we know it is simply a mixture of equal parts gin, Campari and sweet vermouth, stirred and served with an orange slice.
But, it wasn’t always like that.
The first Negroni on record was created in Milan in the 1860s with a simple combination of Campari, sweet vermouth and soda water, and has seen dozens and dozens of iterations since. Negroni-riffs, like the whiskey-laden Boulevardier, have even risen to such fame they’ve become known as a modern classics, too! Jump to a recipe of a classic Negroni.

1 oz. gin
1 oz. sweet vermouth
Build ingredients in a mixing glass and fill with ice. Stir. Strain into a double rocks glass over fresh ice. Garnish with an orange slice.
