Looking for Live Blues? Shaw’s Crab House is Your Place
Did you know you can experience live music weekly in the Shaw’s Chicago Oyster Bar on Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM? Shaw’s Crab House has long been a beacon of free live blues for nearly 30 years, even hosting legends like Buddy Guy for the annual Oyster Fest in 2013. Today, Shaw’s Oyster Bar continues to carry on the tradition of serving up live blues, Midwest hospitality, and Shaw’s classic seafood all in one sitting.

We want to introduce you to the man behind the music of Shaw’s, blues legend, Kenny “Beedy Eyes” Smith, a Grammy-award winning drummer and songwriter. Kenny has been in the music scene his entire life and started playing at Shaw’s in 1992. After 27 years, Kenny has played an instrumental role (pun intended) in the lively, fun vibe that can be experienced in the Oyster Bar by hand picking the artists who play there. We spent time with Kenny to learn about his musical journey and why live blues music at Shaw’s is worth the visit.
How did you become interested in the blues?
“I grew up in the same house as Muddy Waters, who was often cited as “the father of Modern Chicago Blues”, and my father Willy “Big Eyes” Smith was a musician. I fell in love with blues being on the road with my dad.”
How do you select the bands that play at Shaw’s?
“Adding in a musical component comes second to the great food always comes first. I seek out quality musicians that I know can create a vibe that enhances the guests meal and allows them to still engage in conversation without overpowering the room.”
What’s different about playing at Shaw’s Oyster Bar?
“I call the Oyster Bar the party room. You can loosen up your tie and take off the jacket. It’s definitely lively and then the music brings it to a new level. It’s rare in Chicago to have great food with the great music.”
Shaw’s offers live music in the Oyster Bar ever Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday nights from 7 PM – 10 PM. The Oyster Bar is first come, first serve and there is no cover charge.
