August 30 is National Mai Tai Day, and this year the great Mai Tai cocktail turns 74, celebrating the day Victor J. “Trader Vic” Bergeron created the iconic cocktail in Oakland, California.
As the story goes, Trader Vic was behind the bar making drinks for his two friends, Ham and Carrie Guild, from Tahiti. He grabbed a bottle of Jamaican J. Wray Nephew 17-year rum, added fresh lime, Orange Curacao from Holland, Rock Candy syrup and a touch of French Orgeat. Upon first sip Carrie said “Mai Tai — Roa Ae” in Tahitian, which translates to “Out of this world — the best”.
And so the Mai Tai was born.
