Papagus Taverna is opening Thursday, January 21 and will be serving classic Greek dishes available for carryout and delivery in downtown Chicago. Papagus, a Greek Taverna from Lettuce Entertain You, first opened its doors in Chicago’s River North in January 1992, with a second location that opened in Oak Brook in 1997, both restaurants were open for about ten years.
“It has been nearly 14 years since Papagus closed, and we often hear not only from our team but also our guests, that they crave dishes from the restaurant,” explains Chef /Partner John Chiakulas. “We’re excited to be able to bring back some of our signature favorites for those who loved Papagus, and also introduce the concept to new guests.”
Chef / Partner John Chiakulas (Antico Posto, Aba, Beatrix, Ema, L.Woods) was part of the original Papagus chef team and has created the new menu that is now available for carryout and delivery only. The menu is available for lunch and dinner and includes starters like a Spread Sampler, Avgolemono Soup, Melitzanosalata (roasted eggplant) and Saganaki (flaming Kefalotyri cheese), Greek specialties like Spanakopita (spinach and feta in crispy phyllo), House-made Gyros Platter served with plum tomato, red onion, cucumber and tzatziki, Pastitsio and Grilled Chicken Kabob made with a house marinade, oregano and rice pilaf, plus traditional sides like Greek Fries topped with feta, oregano and lemon and Fasolakia (braised green beans). Finish with house-made desserts including Rice Pudding with golden raisin and Chocolate Almond Pita served with a chocolate Brandy sauce and whipped cream.
“The original Papagus was such a special restaurant to be a part of, and it’s exciting for me to be able to bring it back,” shares Chiakulas. “Growing up in a Greek household, every bite of the Pastitsio (baked macaroni, meat sauce and bechamel) brings me back to my family holiday meals when I was a kid.”
The restaurant also features a selection of Greek wines and beers hand-selected by Partner John Economos (Beatrix, Bar Ramone), including Mythos Hellenic Lager, Fix Hellas Lager, Domaine Skouras ‘Zoe’ and Mylonas Winery, Assyrtiko.
“I was raised in a Greek household and I still have family living in Athens, Tripoli, and Kalamata. I’ve been lucky enough to get first-hand experience of the Greek lifestyle and tastes, and I’m looking forward to sharing that with our guests,” shares Economos.
Papagus Taverna is a carryout and delivery-only restaurant located in Chicago’s River North. The restaurant is open Monday-Thursday from 11:00 AM – 8:00PM, Friday from 11:00 AM- 9:00PM, Saturday from 3:00 PM-9:00 PM and Sunday from 3:00 PM – 8:00PM.
