Start the day with these standout morning options

Whether breakfast is the most important meal is debatable — but it’s almost certainly the most underrated. While not as attention-grabbing as brunch or dinner, the first bites of the day get the love they deserve at a plethora of Chicago restaurants. Some have been around for decades, delivering a quality start to every morning, while others bring fresh energy to the breakfast game.

For the 2019 update, new additions include Hyde Park institution Valois, newly-relocated Wishbone, and modern diner 3 Squares Diner.

Lettuce Entertain You Enterprises’ all-day restaurant, bar, coffee shop, and bakery is a good choice any time, but breakfast is where it stands tallest. Unique options abound make it worth a trip, such as a standout version of the Israeli dish shakshouka (poached egg, kale, and feta in tomato sauce with naan). Beatrix is also one of the few Chicago restaurants serving Bulletproof Coffee (a jump-starting blend of coffee, butter, and “brain octane oil”). Excellent grab-and-go options are available as well.
