Savor a little slice of heaven

A slice of pie seems to have an uncanny way of melting away problems and Chicago’s best bakers have an arsenal of great ideas when it comes to the pastry. They’ve all mastered the art of crust making and fill their creations with seasonal fruits and luscious creams. Some use exotic ingredients, providing their own spin on tried-and-true classics.

The following spots represent a tasty cross slice of great pies available in the city. From popular flavors like apple and pumpkin to more complex options, such as chocolate bacon bourbon pecan pie, there’s something for everyone. And apologies to meat pie purveyors, e.g., Pleasant House Pub, as this list focuses solely on the sweet variety. New additions to the map include classic Chicago restaurant the Walnut Room, Alinea Group’s retro St. Clair Supper Club, and Spilt Milk in Oak Park.

Joe’s Seafood, Prime Steak & Stone Crab

Most diners visit Joe’s for the stellar selection of steaks and stone crab claws but shouldn’t overlook the signature Key lime pie. It’s highly recommended that each meal end with a slice of the house specialty, which features a sweet and tart filling over a graham cracker crust, topped with a scoop of whipped cream. The recipe was developed at the legendary Joe’s Stone Crab in Miami.
